Quilling. The name may sound strange, but surely you've seen this craft technique out there. This is because the quilling is nothing more than colored paper rolls that, when united, are capable of forming a multitude of different designs.
And believe me, the quilling is older than it looks. It is unknown exactly where and when the technique emerged, but historical evidence shows that quilling began in the East and spread throughout Europe between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and was widely used in this period to adorn reliquaries and other sacred objects from the interior of the Churches. The Sistine Chapel, for example, has some panels made entirely in quilling.
Later, the quilling became a reference for female craftsmanship, a source of inspiration, creativity and "innocent recreation," as some period magazines mentioned. The women used the technique to decorate household objects such as tea cans, wooden boxes, cabinets, frames, among others.
Nowadays quilling can be used in many ways, going far beyond religious or domestic pieces. The technique allows you to create cards, picture frames and mirrors, cachepôs, costume jewelry and the most varied decorative objects imaginable.
And you, what do you think now of going deeper into this particular universe of quilling and knowing everything you need to start creating your own pieces with the technique? Come with us then:
Materials needed for quilling
Any crafts will require you to list materials, including quilling. But the good side of this technique is that with only three materials it is already possible to begin to create shapes and designs. They are: paper, scissors or stylus and glue.
Over time and experience you can start inserting other materials to finish the pieces, but this is optional and does not interfere with learning.
However, for quilling to work, special attention must be paid to the type of paper used. First, pay attention to the weight of the paper, ie the thickness. It is important to make the job more pliable and the end result more beautiful. It is recommended to use papers weighing from 80 to 120g, such as sulfite, couché, offset, kraft and vergé.
Another detail that deserves attention is in the choice of colors. Choose colored papers on both sides and that are in accordance with the drawing that will be formed, so you guarantee a beautiful job of quilling.
How to do quilling?
With paper, scissors and glue in hand you are already on the way to developing your first piece in the quilling technique. Then there is not much mystery and all the work basically consists of cutting the paper into strips and then rolling them up.
The sequence of the work will depend on what you want to set up. So we brought some tutorial videos to illustrate different ways to use the quilling technique. Check out:
