Drywall or "drywall", in the Portuguese translation, is the name of a wall-building technique that is gaining increasing prominence in interior design.
Drywall is a mixture of plaster, water and additives placed between two sheets of cardboard paper, forming solid plates that can be used to divide environments, to embed lighting, to coat the ceiling and even to serve as a shelf.
The plaster wall, as it is also known, can be used in any environment of the house, including bathroom, kitchen and service area. Yes, it is possible to use the drywall system in humid environments, provided that the correct choice of board is made. There are three different types of drywall available in the market. Know each one better and know the best type for your project:
- White : white or ST (Standard) sheet is the most recommended for linings and dry environments;
- rose : the pink or RF sheet has fiberglass in its composition, being therefore fire resistant and indicated for environments with a fireplace, barbecue or that need to meet specific safety standards;
- Green : The green or UK plate is moisture resistant and should be used in humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms. This type of drywall plate receives additives and fungicides that makes it resistant to fungi and mold;
Advantages and Disadvantages of Drywall
Before opting for the drywall system, however, it is important to know its main advantages and disadvantages. Check below:
Advantages of drywall
1. Easy and quick installation
This is one of the great advantages of drywall, especially when compared to traditional masonry walls. The installation is quick and can even be done within the "do it yourself" concept, provided you have all the tools and materials needed to ensure a good finish.
2. Low cost
If you are looking for a beautiful, practical and economical solution, drywall is the right choice. The cost with material and installation are lower than other types of wall. To give you an idea, the price per square foot of a wall of drywall ranges from $ 20 to $ 40, just the material. With the included labor this value goes to about $ 70 to 100 the square meter. Not to mention that you do not have to worry about plastering, thin mass and other finishes, since the drywall boards come ready to receive the paint or other type of coating that you want to give.
3. Clean work
The drywall practically does not generate residues, like dust or debris, since the installation only involves the fixation of the plates in a metal structure.
Easy installation of electrical, hydraulic and telephone network
The wall of drywall allows the installation of ducts for wiring and water to be made simple and uncomplicated.
4. Sound insulation
It may not look like it, but drywall walls have good sound insulation, especially when filled with mineral wool.
5. Finishing varieties
Drywall walls can receive numerous types of flooring going well beyond traditional painting. It is possible to use tiles, inserts, wallpaper, fabric, textures, among other types of finish.
6. Usable area gain
The thin wall thickness of drywall makes the environment gain floor space, unlike what happens with masonry walls.
1. Low resistance
One of the biggest disadvantages of wall drywall is its low resistance to impacts and blows. But if this your project does not require a high strength material, this problem goes unnoticed.
Outside environments or thinking
Do not even think about using drywall outdoors, it would not survive the weather, such as changes in temperature, winds, heat and rainfall.
Hanging a frame, a mirror, TV, niches and shelves can become something more complicated on a wall of drywall. This is because you will need specific bushes and screws for this type of wall, able to support the weight properly.
How to install drywall
The installation of the drywall is made from the metal structures fixed to the floor, wall and ceiling. It does not require much knowledge and can be done by yourself, as the following video demonstrates:
