Azalea: the flower of winter. Only this characteristic already reveals the special and symbolic side of this plant. But the azalea goes far beyond its meanings, the flower is also a great ally of the decoration of parties and interiors. The delicate petals of vibrant colors flood the environments of joy and life.
Azalea is a plant of oriental origin, more precisely coming from Japan and China. There, in the land of the rising sun, the plant is known as "tree of flowers". Already here in Brazil, the azalea has adapted very well and it is possible to see it bloom in gardens, roads and public squares.
Characteristics of azalea
Azaleas are considered medium-sized shrubs with growth ranging from 60 centimeters to 1.2 m in height. The flowers of the azalea can be simple or folded presenting a great variety of colors, from the white to the red, passing through yellow, orange, pink and mixed colors.
The azaleas bloom in the winter months, which is a curious thing, since in this period most plants are in a state of hibernation.
How to Plant and Make Azalea Seedlings
Azaleas can be planted in pots or in gardens and flower beds. But before placing the plant on land, observe the conditions of the place. Azaleas need at least four hours of sun daily to develop properly. In the case of planting it in a garden, prefer a place where the azalea is protected from the wind.
The soil for planting should be prepared with one part of clay soil, one part sand and another part with organic substrate. For planting in the pot, remember to make a good drainage system, as the plant does not support soggy soils. After preparing the soil and choosing the best location for your azalea, you can plant it.
Now if you are thinking of making azalea seedlings it is also a very simple task. To make azalea seedlings cut a strong branch showing branches and side leaves at least 7 to 10 centimeters in length. Leave only four or five leaves at the top of the branch.
Prepare a pot according to the guidance mentioned above and, very importantly, do not use fertilizers at the time of planting or seedling rearing. It is necessary to wait three months after the planting to make the fertilization.
About two months later the cuttings will already be rooted and ready to be transplanted to a definitive location.
How to Care for Azalea
Care with azalea is relatively simple. If it has been placed in a pot indoors it is important to keep it in a sunny and well-lit place.
For potted azaleas the ideal is to do watering every two days, but if the plant was placed in the garden, water it only if the weather is dry and warm for more than a week.
Pruning should be done only after the flowering period, as well as fertilization.
If you notice wilted, fallen or yellowish leaves it may be that your azalea is dying, but do not panic. Make sure you are not overdoing the amount of water or if you have not been using it for some time. Make the necessary corrections and in a short time the azalea will be recovered.
Curiosities and meaning of azalea
Azalea has interesting meanings, symbologies and curiosities depending on the culture in which it is embedded. In Greek mythology, azalea is related to Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, the arts and war.
Earlier in the UK, girls wore azalea flowers on hats and hair as a way of signaling that they were single and could be asked to marry.
Already for the Orientals, within the vision of Feng Shui, the azalea symbolizes delicacy, love and perseverance. In China is told the story of an emperor in love with a woman who only appeared to him in dreams.
One day he won from a seller a plant with lush flowers. When he got home, he planted it in his garden and the same day the woman of his dreams appeared. The emperor married her, and every day they would drink tea made from the flowers of the azalea.
But, aside, it is important to stress that the leaves and flowers of the azalea are toxic and should not be ingested.
How to Use Azalea in Decoration
Azalea can enter the decoration of homes and parties in countless ways. The most common and popular of them is in the vase. A simple vase with an azalea planted inside is already capable of promoting true miracles due to the aesthetics of the environment and you still have the opportunity to choose the color that best suits your chosen decorating style.
Vases with azalea can be placed on dining tables, racks and sideboards. Or, perhaps, suspended, creating a beautiful air garden with azaleas.
You can also use only the flowering branches of the azalea in solitary pots with water. The effect is equally charming.
